Imogen Buchan-Smith


Imogen is a partner in the Tax & Trusts team.  She specialises in tax, trusts, succession and estate planning. Imogen advises individuals who have any sort of UK nexus, ranging from non-resident and non-domiciled individuals whose sole connection to the UK is a UK property, to resident and domiciled individuals whose families have lived in the UK for many generations. She also supports financial institutions (including banks, trustees and family offices) on fiduciary, tax and trust matters.

Recent highlights

  • Advising families and trustees in relation to a number of family structures in the context of the changes to be made to the tax regime applying to non-UK domiciliaries, and the structures of which they are settlors and beneficiaries with effect from April 2017;
  • Advising individuals, corporates and trustees in relation to the structuring of the ownership of UK residential property as well as ongoing advice in relation to the tax treatment of those structures in the context of the changes that have been made to the tax regime applicable to these structures since April 2013;
  • Advising an executor in relation to a complex, multi-jurisdictional estate, comprising assets in a number of European and non-European countries.

Imogen has contributed to The Trusts and Estates Law & Tax Journal, Planning & Administration of Offshore & Onshore Trusts, and to The Step Handbook for Advisers to Family Offices. Imogen has presented a number of webinars, seminars and in-house training for LexisNexis and MBL, as well as to financial institutions on fiduciary, tax and trust matters. She is a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners.
