Matters to consider when using a known donor

12 March 2018

  1. If using a website or introduction service, be careful:  these are not regulated.  You will need to ensure that the donor is who they say they are and that you do not put yourself into a vulnerable position.
  2. If you are not going to proceed with treatment at a licensed fertility clinic you need to ensure that the donor has had a health check and that you are satisfied with the screening before you proceed.
  3. If you are not proceeding at a licensed UK fertility clinic you will need to seek legal advice to ensure that you and your donor have the legal status you expect from the arrangement.  In some circumstances the donor can unwittingly be deemed the legal father of the child and therefore be financially responsible, or acquire other rights or responsibilities.
