Coronavirus lockdown: who is permitted to work?

24 March 2020

Last night the government imposed a nationwide lockdown and issued this message:

Stay at home

  • Only go outside for food, health reasons or essential work
  • Stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people
  • Wash your hands as soon as you get home

It is not yet clear what amounts to 'essential work' but at the very least it will be work carried out by key workers. Key workers are defined here.

In guidance issued later in the evening the message appeared to be slightly different; the guidance states that citizens may go outside for the purpose of "travelling to and from work, but only where this [work] absolutely cannot be done from home". The full guidance note is here.

We expect the government to issue regulations, hopefully today, which will provide some clarity on the situation. We will publish further updates on the Wilsons website as soon as they become available. In the meantime, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in contact using the form below.
